M：We’re now staying at the Holiday Hotel. How do we get to the airport?
W：We have buses leaving for the airport from downtown every 20 minutes. The bus stops at the Holiday Hotel as well.Be sure to get on the bus before 7∶30.
M：We are talking a little bit about hours.Do you prefer being paid by the hour or do you prefer by the month?
W：I think being paid by the month maybe is a better way to go because if you take holidays you get paid. If you’re paid by the hour, that style of work, you can’t take anytime off because you know when you’re not working, you’re not getting paid.So I think salary is a good way to go.
M：Are these books on sale?
W：The bookstore is celebrating its fifth birthday, so there is a 35% discount on all books.
W：What position would you like to apply for?
M：I’d like to apply for the job as a business manager.
M：What’s the matter with you?

W：Thank you, doctor.I’ll take your advice.
W：Don’t stand at the door, please.Let the passengers off.
M：How much is the ticket, please?
W：One dollar and a half.
M：Does this bus go past the People’s Square?
W：That’s right.Move along, please. There are more people waiting to get on.
M：Would you tell me when we get there?
W：Better watch for it yourself.I might forget.

M：It’s eight o’clock and it’s time for the Headline News Highlights.Top on our list of stories today, a fire has destroyed a $44.9 million house in Dallas, Texas. It took nearly one hundred firefighters seven hours to put out the terrible fire, and not before the fire burnt down what people are saying was the largest house in Dallas.
Local police said the fire broke out at about 1：00 a．m.in the very rich neighborhood of Preston Hollow. The homeowner and his wife ran away from the burning house after waking up and smelling smoke.Firefighters and the police are still not sure what caused the fire but said they believe it may have been old electrical wiring in the kitchen. The house is over 70 years old and the electrical wiring had not been looked at for many years.
The houses around it were also damaged by the fire, but firefighters were able to control the fire before it did too much harm.Although no one died in the fire, a firefighter was injured when a burning wood beam fell on his back. He was taken to the hospital with light burns and is said to be in good condition. Also, the house owner’s cat and dog still haven’t been found. They are thought to be dead. That’s this morning’s top story for Headline News Highlights, I’m Scott Furrow.
Some English words are made up of the same part and have different beginnings or different endings，such as import，export，report and transport. All these words，you can see，have the same “port” which comes from the Latin word，meaning “to carry” or “to move” from one place to another. And according to the bit at the beginning，which we call the prefix the meaning changes.“Import” means “to carry in” or “to bring into a country”；“export”，“ex” means “out of”，so this word means “to carry out of the country”；“re” means “back”，so the “report” means “to tell somebody，to bring back information to somebody”；“transport”，“trans” means “across” and it means “to carry across from one place to another”．
Let’s look at the following words: supporter，reporter, importer and exporter. You can see that in this case these words are nouns which are made up of the verbs plus a suffix，thus meaning a person who completes the verb.So supporter means somebody who supports.A reporter is somebody who reports.Importer is somebody who imports and exporter is somebody who exports，and so on.
21．In the first sentence the underlined word “part” means __C__.
A．different beginnings or different endings
B．the same part that has several meanings
C．the root of the word
D．the same root that has different meanings
解析：词义猜测题。从“Some English words are made up of the same part and have different beginnings and different endings...”可知，part应是词根，而不是前缀或后缀。故选C项。
22．By adding a prefix or a suffix to a root，we can get a word which has __B__.
A．the meaning of a Latin word
B．a different meaning
C．the meaning of “in” or “out of”
D．the same meaning

23．We can get a noun __D__.
A．just by adding “er” to verbs
B．by changing a prefix
C．only by adding “er” to a root
D．by adding a suffix to a verb
解析：细节理解题。根据“You can see that in this case these words are nouns which are made up of the verbs plus a suffix，thus meaning a person who completes the verb.”可知，在动词后加上一个后缀，就变成了名词。故选D项。
