W：Peter, you should be at school at 7∶30 tomorrow.
M：Why so early? The class begins at 7∶45!
W：Let’s go to see a film this weekend.
M：Sounds good.Why not?
M：Would you like a cup of coffee?
W：Thanks, but I don’t really want more coffee before I go to bed.I’d rather have something to eat.I’m always very hungry when I wake up in the morning.
M：Why didn’t you accept the position of sales manager in Peru?
W：I didn’t want to live outside this country. I got a good job offer here.
W：Jane told me she would meet me at the library gate at one o’clock, but she hasn’t shown up yet.
M：Oh, I saw her upstairs in the reading room. She said she’d been expecting you.
W：Oh, yes, it’s the reading room.I mistook it as the library gate.
W：Michael, where are you from?
M：I was born in Beijing.Later I went to college in Nanjing, but I work in Shanghai now. How about you?
W：I’m from Scotland.
M：What’s it like?
W：The weather is pretty cold there.I’m sure it’s the coldest part of the British Isles.
M：Beijing is very cold in winter, too and it’s rather dry. However, I like winter. Summer is just too hot!
W：Well, I think you’re lucky to have a hot summer.Summer in Scotland is petty wet and cool.
M：Hi, Jane. It’s nice to see you again.I heard that you went to the US during the vacation.
W：Yes.I went to New York to attend a summer course in English.
M：Wow.You were lucky. How long did you stay there?
W：About 50 days.I went there on July 5th and came back on August 25th.
M：How about the course?
W：The course was very good. The teachers were nice. They taught us to listen, speak, read and write in English, but it was mostly speaking. One interesting thing I found was that the American classes are different from our classes here because the students have a lot more freedom. You can sit anywhere you like in the classroom. You can ask the teachers questions at any time during the class, and you are welcome to share your ideas with the class.I really like this kind of class.
M：How interesting! Maybe our teacher should try that.
W：What did you say?
M：I said it’s a lovely day.Why don’t we go for a walk?
W：Well, I feel a little tired.
M：Come on! A little labor, much health.
W：Then can you wait a few minutes? I want to finish writing this letter.
M：Don’t take too long.It would be a shame not to take advantage of such lovely weather.
W：I won’t be long.No more than ten minutes. Why don’t you go ahead and I’ll meet you in the park?
M：I believe I will.Look for me near the lake.
W：Saw you on the 7 o’clock news last night.
W：So tell us what happened?
M：I was wandering on the beach, when I heard someone calling for help. I looked up, and there on a huge rock was a little kid. He’d climbed way up on the rock and was stuck.
W：What did you do?
M：My first thought was to run and get help, but the boy was crying, and he looked as though he’d fall at any moment. So I climbed up to get him down. The rocks were very loose, and I almost fell off a couple of times.I was beginning to think it wasn’t such a good idea to climb up there without getting help. Then I reached the boy OK, but then I couldn’t get him down.So we were both stuck.
W：So what did you do?
M：I cried for help.Soon there was a small crowd on the beach. One of them called the Coast Rescue Service. After about five minutes there was an airplane overhead, and we were rescued.
There is nothing like the smell of new shoes. How often do you go shoe shopping? Do you go for the high－end brands, like Jimmy Choo, Louboutin, or Nike? Or do you just need something to cover up your feet? For some people, shoe shopping is a hobby. For some people, it is a wild love! Other people prefer practical uses. They only buy the shoes they need for their everyday life.
Do you know that the average American woman owns 27 pairs of shoes while the average American man only owns 19? Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines, was famous for owning 3,000 pairs of shoes! These days, people need different types of shoes for different occasions. If you live in a rainy climate, you definitely need a pair of boots. If you live somewhere hot, you need sandals. If you like to work out, you will need athletic shoes, and if you need to go to a special event, you will need dress shoes. And of course, you have to match your shoes to your suit!
The United States has more tornadoes (龙卷风) than any other country in the world. In a normal year there are 800 or 1,000 tornadoes. Most happen in the middle part of the country.Tornadoes form when warm and cool air meet.In the Midwest，the warm air from the Gulf of Mexico often meets the cold air from Canada.
The usual tornado season is March through May.Tornadoes form most often in the afternoon and early evening. There is often no warning of a tornado.People who live in the Midwest know the signs (征兆) of tornado activity. The sky becomes dark，often a greenish color.Dark clouds appear in the sky and there is often a large hail (冰雹)．Suddenly，there is a loud sound，like a train or a jet plane.Sometimes，two，three，five，ten or more tornadoes can form over a large area.
This type of tornado activity hit Oklahoma and Kansas in May 1999.The day was stormy，with heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon. As the storms continued，tornadoes began to form.Dozens of tornadoes hit towns and neighborhoods in Oklahoma，then in Kansas. Some stayed on the ground for several hours，destroying everything they touched. The tornadoes killed 43 people and injured 600 others. They destroyed thousands of homes and businesses. In some areas，not one home stood. In other areas，the tornadoes destroyed every home on the left side of the street，but didn’t touch any homes on the right side. The tornadoes lifted people and cars into the air and then threw them back down to earth. So it is important to know where to hide and how to protect yourself in the face of a tornado.
