Whether you see yourself pursuing a career in film-making or want to learn the practical skills for yourself, New York Film Academy’s film camps are perfect for everyone with an interest in making films. The film camps are designed for people with little or no experience in making films.
Here are some classes and subjects in the camps.
Director’s craft
As the director is the leader of a film set, students will learn the language and practice of film-making so that they can apply this knowledge to their own original films. They will discuss shooting plans for their film projects and screen their work with their instructor throughout the course. Each student directs a series of films in groups of four. Groups are required to meet each week with the directing instructor to review scripts and shooting plans.

Hands-on digital camera
Students will learn to shoot using cameras. They will learn proper loading, operation, and maintenance of the camera. In the first week, students will learn shoot, screen tests for focus, slow/fast motion, and so on. Students needing extra instruction are given review sessions if necessary.
Digital editing
Editing process gives actual structures. Students will learn to edit their films with digital editing software. Their instructors will cover both the technical aspects of the editing process, as well as the conventions and theory behind editing choices and styles.
Working with actors
To direct actors, one must learn how to work with actors and receive instruction and experience in how to get effective performances from actors. Students also get the chance to gain some experience as actors.
Each summer film camp for teens at the Film Academy will challenge you to become a well-rounded film-maker with actual experience making films. Click here to apply today.

A ten-year-old New Yorker who was bullied at school is likely making her bullies jealous these days—because how many of them can say they’ve shown a collection of clothing at New York Fashion Week?
Egypt Ufele, who goes by the name Ify, didn’t let those fifth-grade bullies at her Queens school keep her down, and instead took the very thing they made fun of her for and used it to make a name for herself in the fashion world.
“I turned negative attention into positive attention,” she said, shortly after showing her collection at Fashion Week. Ify said that some of the other kids would give her a hard time for her weight. Instead of changing herself because of their unkind words, though, she took the word “chubby” back—creating her own plus-size fashion line that she calls ChubiiLine.
“People tell me I’m good at fashion,” Ify said. “Sometimes I give my models ideas, and then we agree on it, and I end up making it.”
Ify’s been doing the work all along and, according to her grandma Nellie Rembert, takes the process very seriously. First, the fifth grader started sewing clothes for her toys by hand. Then, she graduated to grandma’s sewing machine, designing clothes for kids.
“She comes out of school, goes straight into homework, and when other kids are out playing she’s either sewing clothes or she’ s creating new ideas,” her mom, Dr. Reba Perry, said.
The results—an African-inspired collection—have earned her attention from anti-bullying groups and fashion lovers. Though other children have shown collections at Fashion Week in the past, Ify is the only one to have dressed plus-size women.
She even helped them get ready backstage, tying them up and making sure they were styled perfectly. “Being a designer and being at fashion shows are really exciting because you get a lot of attention, and a lot of people ask you what inspires you,” she said.
24. What did Ify do when she was bullied?
A. She took comfort from the sewing machine. B. She turned to her mother for help.
C. She reported it to her teacher. D. She decided to lose weight.
25. How do people look at ChubiiLine?
A. They think little of it. B. They are in favor of it.
C. They have doubts about it. D. They are unconcerned about it.
26. In the beginning, Ify made clothes for ______.
A. her mother B. kids C. her toys D. adults
27. Which of the following can best describe Ify?
A. Patient and lovely. B. Brave and talkative.
C. Sporty and strong-minded. D. Creative and hardworking.
C
Plastic pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems in the world. Each year, millions of tons of plastic waste end up in oceans, forests and landfills, harming wildlife and ecosystems. In recent years, biodegradable plastics have been promoted as a promising solution to this crisis.
Biodegradable plastics are designed to break down naturally into harmless substances, such as water and carbon dioxide, with the help of microorganisms like bacteria and fungi. Unlike traditional plastics, which can take hundreds of years to decompose (分解), some biodegradable plastics can break down in just a few months under the right conditions.
However, the reality is more complicated than it seems. Most biodegradable plastics require specific environmental conditions to decompose— high temperatures, sufficient moisture and the presence of certain microorganisms. For example, some biodegradable plastics can only break down in industrial composting facilities, not in the ocean or ordinary landfills. If they end up in the wrong environment, they can persist for just as long as traditional plastics. Besides, the production of biodegradable plastics has its own environmental costs. Many of these plastics are made from crops like corn and sugarcane, which require large amounts of land, water and fertilizers. This can lead to deforestation and soil degradation, especially in developing countries where agricultural land is limited. And there is also a risk of “greenwashing”— companies using the label “biodegradable” to make their products seem more environmentally friendly, even if the plastics do not meet strict standards. This confuses consumers and may lead them to use more plastic, thinking it is harmless.
So, are biodegradable plastics a perfect solution? I think we’ve already had the answer. They can play a role in reducing plastic pollution, but only if they are used correctly, disposed of properly, and combined with other measures such as reducing plastic use, reusing products and recycling.
28. What is the key characteristic of biodegradable plastics?
A. They are produced entirely from agricultural waste.
B. They can decompose quickly in any natural environment.
C. They are always cheaper and more durable than traditional plastics.
D. They are intended to decompose naturally into harmless substances.
29. Why can’t biodegradable plastics break down in ordinary landfills?
A. They are mixed with traditional plastics.
B. There is no space for them to break down.
C. They lack the necessary environmental conditions.
D. They produce harmful gases that stop decomposition.
30. In Paragraph 3, what does “greenwashing” refer to?
A. Planting trees to offset plastic pollution
B. Recycling plastic waste into green products
C. Making false environmental claims for profit
D. Using green materials to make plastic products
31. What is the writer’s attitude towards biodegradable plastics as a solution?
A. Favourable. B. Objective. C. Unconcerned. D. Opposed.
D
Imagine that as you are boarding an airplane, half the engineers who built the plane tell you there is a 10 percent chance the plane will crash, killing you and everyone else on board. Would you still board?
Not long ago, over 700 top researchers behind the leading AI companies were asked in a survey about future AI risks. Half of those surveyed said that there was a 10 percent or greater chance of human extinction from future AI systems. Technology companies are caught in a race to put all humans on that plane.
The fear of AI has haunted(困扰) humans since the mid-20th century, yet until recently it has been a distant prospect, something that belongs in science fiction more than in serious scientific and political discussions. It’s difficult for human minds to understand the abilities of GPT-4 and similar tools. It is even harder to understand the speed at which these tools are developing even more powerful abilities. But most of the key skills lead to one thing: the ability to manipulate and develop language, whether with words, sounds or images.
In the beginning was the word. Language is the operating system of human culture. From language emerges myth and law, goods and money, art and science, friendships and nations—even computer code. AI’s new control of language means it can now hack and manipulate the operating system of civilization. What would it mean for humans to live in a world where a large percentage of stories, melodies, images, laws, policies and tools are shaped by non-human intelligence? In games like chess, no human can hope to beat a computer.
What happens when the same thing happens in art, politics, and even religion? Humans often don’t get to reality directly. We are surrounded by culture, experiencing reality through a cultural prism(棱镜). Our views are shaped by the reports of journalists and the descriptions of friends. What will it be like to experience reality through a prism produced by non-human intelligence? The time to take the AI matter seriously is before our politics, our economy and our daily life become dependent on it.
32. Why does the author mention a plane that may crash in paragraph 1?
A. To stress the importance of AI ethic. B. To show recent developments in AI.
C. To introduce the risks involved with AI. D. To explain the wide uses of AI technology.
33. What does the word “hack” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. damage. B. protect. C. control. D. reach.
34. By mentioning the abilities of AI, the author wants to say that ______.
A. the risk of using AI is still far away
B. some AI tools are useful for people’s daily life
C. AI has already begun to shape our society in some ways
D. people are greatly influenced by technological innovations
35. What is the best title of the passage?
A. How can AI manipulate the human world?
B. AI has been changing a lot, and what’s next?
C. Why not welcome AI, your next family member?
D. When it comes to the AI world, what’s safe enough?

How to Stay Healthy During Flu Season
Flu season usually hits in late autumn and winter, making people more likely to catch colds or the flu. 36 By taking some simple steps, you can protect yourself and reduce the risk of getting sick.
First, get a flu vaccine (疫苗) as early as possible. 37 It helps your body build up protection against the most common flu viruses. Remember that the vaccine needs about two weeks to take effect, so don’t wait until you feel sick to get it.
Another important point is keeping good hygiene (卫生) habits. Washing your hands often is one of the most effective ways. 38 Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, since these parts are easy entry points for viruses.
39 Regular exercise, like jogging or swimming, can strengthen your immune system. Also, eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables provides your body with necessary vitamins and minerals. What’s more, make sure to get enough sleep every night—lack of sleep weakens your body’s ability to fight diseases.
Finally, try to stay away from crowded places if possible. 40 If you have to go, wear a mask to reduce the chance of breathing in viruses from others.
Following these tips will help you through flu season with a healthy body.
A. Exercise and eat well to keep your body strong.
B. The flu vaccine is safe for most people over 6 months old.
C. Many people may suffer from fever, cough and body pain.
D. Use soap and water and wash for at least 20 seconds each time.
E. If you start to feel sick, stay at home and rest to prevent spreading the flu to others.
F. It is necessary to drink more water and avoid drinking sugary drinks every day.
G. Crowded places are where viruses can spread from person to person quickly.

Little Lucy lived in a very poor part of a big city. One day, her class teacher talked about gifts and how it was much more important to give them than to receive them. She said that she hoped all the boys and girls in the class would remember to give something, however small, to their loved ones to show how much they loved them.
Afterward Lucy thought a good deal about what the teacher had said and wondered how she could afford to give anything to anybody. Her daddy gave her $1 a week for pocket money, and that didn’t go very far these days. Somehow, she thought, she would try to buy something for mother, and father, and brother, and sister, but, oh, dear, there was Grandma, too! What could she do about Grandma?
The next time she went to class she asked the teacher if it would be acceptable to give Grandma just a card. The teacher said Grandma would be happy to receive the smallest thing if it was given in love. So Lucy began searching for a card for Grandma that wouldn’t cost too much. One day she saw it. The very one! It had a picture of a cat on it, and Lucy remembered that Grandma had just lost old tabby cat (斑猫) that she had loved so much. So she bought the card, paying one whole week’s pocket money for it.
On the day Lucy gave Grandma the card, she was overjoyed to see how pleased Grandma was. She said the picture of the cat was just like her own precious tabby. This gave Lucy an idea. “Someday,” she said to herself, “I’ll buy my granny a real cat. Just think how happy she’ll be then!”
She found a pet shop and asked how much a real cat would cost. “Twenty dollars,” said the man. Lucy’s face fell. Twenty dollars! How in the world would she ever get $20? That would take all her pocket money for 20 weeks — five whole months!

Good morning, respected teachers and dear fellow students, I’m Li Hua, president of the Student Union. It’s my great honor to stand here and deliver a speech titled Embrace Low-Carbon Life, Build a Green Campus.
To advocate environmental protection and practice green lifestyles, our school will hold the first Campus Low-Carbon Festival. Here are some practical suggestions. First, it is essential that we cultivate the habit of conserving energy by turning off lights and taps upon leaving classrooms. Second, choose to walk or cycle to school instead of taking cars to minimize carbon emissions. Third, avoid disposable items such as plastic bags, replacing them with reusable alternatives to decrease plastic pollution.
Let’s take action together. Every small effort counts in building a green and low-carbon campus!
Thank you for your listening!
第二节
As she stood on the street, Lucy felt something brushing her leg. Looking down, she saw a beautiful tabby cat. For a moment she was tempted to pick it up and run home with it. However, she quickly dismissed the thought. Just then, a lady called out, “My cat seems to like you.” Lucy responded with a smile, expressing her desire to give one to Grandma and her concern over the cost of $20 at the pet shop. The lady nodded sympathetically, mentioning that her cat would soon have kittens. She would love Lucy to come and choose one for her grandma once they are old enough. Overjoyed, Lucy thanked the lady warmly.
Two months later, Lucy went to the lady’s house to get a baby cat. There, she found four adorable kittens and chose the one that looked the most like the cat Grandma had lost. As she made her way back home, eager to deliver the precious gift to her grandma, the anticipation consumed her. When Lucy finally presented the cat, Grandma was surprised and pleased. After learning the heartwarming story behind the thoughtful gesture, Grandma was also deeply touched. As Lucy saw the kitten in Grandma’s arms, she knew her gift had brought immeasurable joy to her beloved grandma.
