The Alcatraz Gardens Stewardship Program

The Alcatraz Gardens Stewardship Program aims to protect the Alcatraz historic gardens once tended by the island’s military (军事的) members. For more than a century, the gardens were an important part of everyday life for officers and families sent to Alcatraz on duty. Many of the plants selected by these earlier gardeners proved to be excellent choices for the poor environment, flowering through the forty years of ignorance that followed its closing.

Volunteers help care for the gardens with activities such as weeding, planting, promoting, and seed collecting. As an added advantage, garden volunteers arrive on Alcatraz before other visitors, so you can experience the island during the most peaceful time of day. Please note, booking is required.

WORKING HOURS: Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. — 12 a.m.

AGE, SKILLS, WHAT TO BRING

● Volunteers aged 15 and up are welcome.

● We’ll be working rain or shine. Wear dirt-resistant clothes. Long trousers and closed-toe shoes are required. Bring outer wear for changing weather and raincoat if necessary.

● No experience necessary. Training and tools will be provided. Complete community service (社区服务) requirements.

When it comes to food, you really can have too much of a good thing. These foods can be healthy, but only when you don’t overdo it.

Nuts

Nuts are an extraordinary source of healthy fats, which can be beneficial for maintaining a healthy heart. Despite the benefits, nuts are so percent fat and high in calories. Adding a few handfuls to your daily diet to replace unhealthy fats is ideal, but do not cat too much.

Cheese

Cheese (along with most dairy products) is a good source of calcium (钙) and protein (蛋白质), which can advance healthy bone development and heart strength. However, eating too much cheese is harmful to your health and actually cancels out any health benefits. And remember to select varieties that are lower in sodium and fat.

Bottled Green Juices

All-natural green juices are a healthy way to get the daily doses (剂量) of fruit and vegetables that most of us forget about. However, most bottled green juices are extraordinarily high in sugar, which can take away the health benefits that natural versions promise. When selecting a juice, make sure to keep an eye on the amount of sugar in each.

10. What do nuts and cheese have in common?

A. Both are high in calories. B. Both are good for heart.

C. Both are helpful in weight loss. D. Both are popular snacks.

11. What might be the main concern about bottled green juices according to the text?

A. They are not fresh. B. They are expensive.

C. They are not natural. D. They are high in sugar.

Are you looking for some movies? You’ve landed on the right place. Let’s take a look at the list I’ve collected.

A Beautiful Mind

A Beautiful Mind is the story of John Nash, a mathematician who went on to win the Nobel Prize for his Game Theory. This movie brings his whole journey on screen — from his beginning to his downhill ride.

The first half is all about his rise to fame while the second half shows how he slowly falls into madness. After many years of fighting, he finally is victorious.

I.Q.

The story is about an auto mechanic who falls for Albert Einstein’s niece. The only problem is that she is engaged (已订婚的) to someone else. Fortunately, Einstein likes him. The young man pretends to be a physicist to run after her, but things don’t go as he has planned.

If A Beautiful Mind was a little too heavy for you, I.Q. would be the perfect fit. It’s a light drama that is funny and heartwarming for the most part.

Good Will Hunting

Good Will Hunting is a touching tale of a troubled young man called Will Hunting who is gifted with a natural talent in mathematics.

However, he is struggling to find his identity. He can solve any math problem, but not the one he seems to be struggling with in his life. His life seems to be getting only worse until one day he meets Sean, a therapist, who helps him find direction in life.

Creation

Creation is a story of a famous scientist, Charles Darwin, best known for his Theory of Evolution. This movie attempts to bring his struggling days into focus, the time when he was dealing with the loss of his daughter and was suffering from hallucinations (幻觉). At the same time, he was working on a book called On the Origin of Species, which he finally completed.

All in all, Creation is a great historical drama.

13. If you are interested in a relaxing movie, which one can you see?

A. I.Q B. Creation

C. A Beautiful Mind D. Good Will Hunting

14. Who are experts in mathematics?

A. Will Hunting and Sean. B. John Nash and Will Hunting.

C. Charles Darwin and Sean. D. John Nash and Charles Darwin.

15. What’s the main purpose of the text?

A. To introduce movies. B. To promote science.

C. To recommend actors. D. To compare movies.
