My nanny took care of me from the time I was born until I was 15. She lived with my family in our apartment in Hong Kong. My parents had government jobs and worked long hours, so they needed someone to change my diapers, pick me up from school and steam me fish, Chinese style.

Nanny Zeny was from the Philippines. She was the same age and height — five feet — as my mother but her skin was more tanned and she had a distinct mole (痣) on her lower lip. The only time she took off was on Sundays, when she would put on makeup, spritz some perfume (香水) and head to church with the other Filipino nannies who were her friends.

In the hours before my parents came home from work, Nanny Zeny would take the chopping boards to the dining table and listen to me complain about classmates, friends and homework. As she worked her way through the choy sum and gai lan (vegetables she knew I liked), she would give advice in the form of quotes from the Bible.

It was hard for me to view her as anything but a second mother. From time to time, my real mother talked to Nanny Zeny about not completing certain chores properly, and my mother would wonder why I always defended her.

Even after leaving Hong Kong in 2015 to attend high school in the United States, and eventually university in Canada, I still found myself thinking about Nanny Zeny, who also left Hong Kong and went back to the Philippines. I knew I was on her mind, too — she continued sending me birthday wishes on Facebook, asking how my parents were doing and forwarding me inspiring Biblical quotes. In December 2019, I visited her house in the Philippines and was surprised to see that her living room was plastered with (贴满) relics from my childhood.

My parents regularly sent Nanny Zeny a small sum of money. For years I had thought it was simply a way to thank her for all those hours she spent cooking and cleaning. But as I grew older, I began to understand why my parents felt a deep sense of gratitude for her influence on my emotional and moral development.

24. What did Nanny Zeny do for the author during his growth?

A. She advised me on my troubles. B. She cooked me her favorite dishes.

C. She sent me to school every day. D. She instructed me in my studies.

25. After Nanny Zeny retired, how did they keep in touch with each other?

A. The author paid a yearly visit to Nanny Zeny’s house.

B. They celebrated the author’s birthday together every year.

C. My parents offered Auntie Zeny some money occasionally.

D. Nanny Zeny communicated with the author on social media.

26. Which of the following can best describe Nanny Zeny?

A. Fashionable and careful. B. Caring and patient.

C. Hardworking and creative. D. Responsible and humorous.

27. What can we learn from the relationship between Nanny Zeny and the author?

A. Love conquers all. B. Love me, love my dog.

C. Love is a two-way street. D. Love makes the world go round.

C

Brazilian artist and activist Mundano recently painted an unusual mural (壁画) on a building in Sao Paulo. The paint included materials collected from natural disasters, such as ash from wildfires and mud from floods. Mundano hoped to draw global attention to climate change, as extreme weather events have been causing destruction across Brazil.

The large mural — over 30 meters high and 48 meters wide-shows the gray remains of trees on a brown land that is dry and cracked, representing the deforestation (滥伐森林) and serious drought in the Amazon rainforest.

The mural also shows local activist Alessandra Korap wearing a circle of flowers around her head. She holds a sign that says: “Stop the destruction #keep your promise.” The artist says those messages are directed to Cargill, a US-based soybean (大豆) producer. Soy farming is one of the biggest causes of deforestation in the Amazon. Cargill says it will end deforestation in its supply chain in Brazil by 2025. Mundano is seeking to hold the company responsible for that promise.

In recent months, human-caused wildfires have severely damaged protected places in the Amazon area. Smoke spread over a very large area and affected the air quality in some Brazilian cities.

Drought has caused a terrible situation nationwide. On October 22, the depth of the Amazon’s Negro River measured (测量) 12.46 meters, showing a small increase from 10 days earlier, when the river was at its lowest point since measurements started 122 years ago. But this last reported measure is still about 6 meters below normal for the same date in earlier years.

Earlier this year, a flood in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul killed more than 180people, affected over 2 million people, and destroyed city communities.

Mundano used mud from that flood to create the mural, ashes from Brazil’s fires in the Atlantic Forest, and clay from an Amazon village where Alessandra Korap is from. “From floods to droughts, everything is connected!” Mundano said in an interview.

28. What makes the mural unique?

A. Its size. B. Its paint. C. Its colors. D. Its audience.

29. Why does Mundano include Alessandra Korap in his mural?

A. To push Cargill to honor its promise. B. To celebrate Brazil’s natural beauty.

C. To draw attention to global warming. D. To show the importance of soybeans.

30. What can we learn about the Negro River?

A. A flood here took over 180 lives. B. Its depth hit a record low on Oct. 22.

C. It was 6.46m deep 122 years ago. D. It has suffered greatly from drought.

31. What is implied in Mundano’s actions and words in the last paragraph?

A. Climate disasters are closely related. B. The Amazon is home to great civilizations.

C. Natural materials are perfect for painting. D. Floods and droughts are the worst disasters.

D

Everywhere you go, it seems like people are using something to reduce the noise in their lives. They wear over-ear headphones on public transportation, during long flights, or in open-plan offices, or use colored earplugs (耳塞) at concerts. Silence is now big business, with the global market for noise-cancelling headphones bringing $13.1 billion in 2021. Experts predict that this figure will triple by 2031. While these market-based solutions are becoming popular, they raise a question: Are there physical and social effects to shutting out the world around us?

Noise-cancelling technology was first developed in the 1950s to reduce cockpit noise for pilots. The headphones today use technology known as active noise control. However, too much of a good thing also has its downsides. Many studies have shown that constant earplug wearing, day and night, over just one week can lead to a condition known as tinnitus (耳鸣). “When you stop listening to outside sounds, your brain starts to turn up its ‘internal volume’ so that it can still pick up on things.” McAlpine says. “If you stop the sound going into your ears, it’s like messing with how your brain is supposed to work naturally.”

When it comes to distraction (干扰), the type of noise may matter as much as volume. Moderate (适中的) background noise, around 70dB, has been found to advance performance on creative tasks, for example. “Some people can work really effectively in buzzy cafes and even airports, and yet they can’t focus in the same way in an office. Even if it isn’t as noisy,” McAlpine says. “Your brain in the office is automatically paying attention to all those other conversations — because they might be about something you need to know.”

How, then, can we deal with all the loud distractions in our modern lives? An over-dependence on noise-cancelling technology is not necessarily the solution, says McAlpine. “We have given more control to outside sources over our sound environment compared to our visual environment,” he says. If people started wearing AR/VR goggles and living in their own virtual worlds instead of focusing on improving the physical environment, “And that’s problematic.”

32. What is the purpose of noise-cancelling headphones?

A. To pick up the sounds.

B. To reduce the rate of tinnitus.

C. To improve performance on creative tasks.

D. To create a sense of silence in noisy environments.

33. Which statement is TRUE according to the article?

A. Wearing noise-cancelling headphones has no physical or social costs.

B. Creative task performance can be improved by the moderate background noise.

C. Noise-cancelling technology was first developed in the 1950s for concertgoers.

D. The global market for noise-cancelling headphones is believed to drop by 2031.

34. What does the underlined word “buzzy” mean in the fourth paragraph?

A. Lively. B. Advanced. C. Interesting. D. Quiet.

35. What attitude does McAlpine hold towards the over-dependence on the technology?

A. Negative. B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Indifferent.
