Since childhood, fried chicken had been my favorite food for some twenty years. I would have it at least three times a week, whether it was from a fast-food joint, a local diner, or even homemade. I planned my outings around places that served delicious fried chicken. There were times when I tried to cut back on it, especially when I started to gain some weight, but I always ended up giving in to my desire within a few days.

This year, a series of events changed my relationship with fried chicken forever. I began experiencing frequent stomachaches. Doctors couldn’t directly link these problems to fried chicken, but I noticed that every time I ate it, my discomfort worsened. Additionally, I started to realize that the once-mouthwatering smell and taste now left a heavy, greasy feeling in my mouth that I couldn’t ignore. One evening, after finishing a large bucket of fried chicken, I felt so sick that I couldn’t sleep well all night. That was the turning point. I decided that it was time to quit.

Why was it so hard to let go before? Is there really something addictive in fried chicken? While there’s no official “fried chicken addiction” listed in medical books, experts point out factors that could contribute to its allure. Dr. Johnson from a nutrition research center mentions two main elements: the high-fat content and the combination of spices, which makes us feel good and makes us want more. Gradually this circle becomes habitual over time.

Now, I’m on Day 35 of my “fried-chicken-free” journey. The first week was hard. I had strong desire and even felt a bit down at times. But as the days passed, I started to feel better. My stomach problems became less frequent, and I even noticed that I had more energy. I’m really proud of myself for breaking this long-standing habit. If I can overcome my love for fried chicken, I believe I can overcome any other challenging habit in my life.

24. What can we know about the author from Paragraph 1?

A. The author ate fried chicken occasionally.

B. The author had a deep and long-lasting love for fried chicken.

C. The author never worried about the health risks of eating fried chicken.

D. The author successfully reduced the intake of fried chicken several times.

25. What led the author to give up fried chicken?

A. A doctor’s direct warning about health.

B. The advice on a healthier diet from a friend.

C. A newfound dislike for the smell of chicken.

D. Health problems and an unpleasant feeling after eating.

26. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “allure” in Paragraph 3?

A. attraction B. combination C. production D. appreciation

27. How does the author feel about giving up fried chicken?

A. Satisfied. B. Confused. C. Annoyed. D. Impressed.

When Jewel opened at Singapore’s Changi Airport six years ago, its greenery and waterfalls amazed everyone. The already world-famous airport was transforming (转换) itself into a destination for visitors. However, turning an airport into a destination is hard, especially while respecting local culture. The key is to make these global gateways local.

New airport terminals (机场航站楼) make every effort to highlight their locations. The architecture is often inspired by nearby mountains or the beach. Popular local cafes and shops are moving into the terminal. And everything is often locally themed. Yantai Penglai International Airport in China features curves and materials that “echo (呼应) the nature all around the structure”.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) expanded the concept of local design across the entire Harvey Milk Terminal 1. Doug Yakel, a public information officer at SFO, explains that even if travelers aren’t going into the city, they can briefly experience what San Francisco and the Bay Area represent. He highlights the local-themed concessions, art, and quiet areas with chaise lounges.

Turning the airport into a destination takes the idea of a local one-stop further. Portland International Airport (PDX) first achieved this in the late 1980s, when it opened the Oregon Market shopping mall. Over the years, the hallway hosted many local brands that were popular even with non-travelers until it closed in 2019 for a new terminal. ZGF architects designed the terminal to mimic a walk in the forest, with open views that highlight Portland’s natural surroundings. While PDX lacks exact data on non-traveler visits, short-term parking receipts (停车收据) have risen since the terminal’s August 2024 opening.

Like others, Denver International Airport is trying to copy at least some of Changi’s success. But whether its remote location — 20 miles from downtown can attract locals remains an open question.

28. Why does the author mention Yantai Penglai International Airport?

A. To compare it with Changi Airport in terms of popularity.

B. To show how airports use local natural features in their design.

C. To explain why Chinese airports are more modern than others.

D. To tell the importance of international cooperation in design.

29. What does the increase in short-term parking receipts at PDX suggest?

A. The new terminal has caused traffic jams.

B. The airport is attracting more local visitors.

C. The parking fees at the airport have gone up.

D. More travelers are choosing to drive to the airport.

30. What can be inferred about Denver International Airport?

A. Its local people have a strong passion for its change.

B. Its plan is to shift the terminal closer to Changi Airport.

C. Its far-from-town site may lessen its appeal to nearby locals.

D. Its yearly visitor number has already gone beyond Changi’s footfall.

31. What is the text mainly about?

A. Why International Airports are promoting tourism

B. Why airports are making themselves destinations for visitors

C. How airport terminals are making attempts to stress their locations

D. How airports are changing themselves into destinations for visitors

D

A new study shows that sound is an important, yet often undervalued part of how skateboarders connect with the activity. Skateboarders not only see their environment but also feel and hear it. Photos and videos may show the amazing moves, but they don’t express the whole experience.

The sounds from the city surfaces — the “skate sound” — are a key part of the skateboarding experience. These sounds enable skateboarders to check the success of their moves, test if surfaces are suitable for skating, and send messages to others around them.

However, the study introduces an interesting idea — the “skate sound paradox (矛盾)”. Skateboarders are aware of the troubling nature of the noise they produce and change their behavior accordingly in certain situations to make less noise. Skateboarders describe the sound of the sport as both unpleasant and pleasant.

Researchers from the University of Exeter carried out interviews with 58 adult skateboarders aged between 19 and 51 from different places and experience levels. They found that the skate sound made people feel included, especially those who might feel left out of more traditional and regular sports. Interestingly, most skateboarders were against the idea of listening to music through headphones while skateboarding, viewing it as unfriendly. The sport is considered a social activity, and wearing headphones breaks the connection with the group and the overall experience.

However, those who chose to listen to music through headphones while skateboarding had their reasons. Music helped with focus for some skateboarders, while headphones served as a social barrier (障碍) for others, offering them more confidence.

The study shows that the skateboard is not just a toy or sports object but an “ear under the feet”. Next time you hear the sounds of wheels and the board hitting the ground, think about what skateboarders are listening to. They’re not simply making noise. Skateboarders are learning through their senses, connecting with their friends, and perhaps, finding unusual peace in a noisy world.

32. What does the new study focus on?

A. The health benefits of skateboarding practice.

B. The social connections between skateboarders.

C. The influence of skateboarding on city culture.

D. The role of sound in skateboarding experiences.

33. How do skateboarders behave according to the “skate sound paradox”?

A. Valuing yet trying to control the sound. B. Paying attention to some simple moves.

C. Staying away from noisy skating areas. D. Lowering the noise through a group effort.

34. What did the findings from the interviews show about the skate sound?

A. It does harm to hearing ability. B. It creates a sense of belonging.

C. It raises skateboarders’ confidence. D. It fits well with background music.

35. What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?

A. Realize the danger of skateboarding.

B. Respect skateboarders’ regular training habits.

C. Find peace in freestyle skateboarding in the noisy world.

D. Recognize the importance of the skate sounds to skateboarders.
