Best Markets in France to Visit
Isle-sur-la-Sorgue’s antique market in Provence
Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is a small town in the south of France, better known for being one of the largest antique markets in Provence. Isle-sur-la-Sorgue’s famous antique market is held every Sunday, and runs throughout the full day. However, if you want to pick up something back home for your family or friends, I recommend you go early, because all the good stuff sells quickly.
Marché d’ Aligre in Paris
Along with foods from all across France, it also includes other items like wines, antiques, household goods, fabrics, old books, furniture, etc. The market is open every day except Monday from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm on weekdays and up to 2:30 pm on weekends. You can book a guided tour to Marché d’ Aligre.
Marché des Lices in Rennes
In the heart of the city is a large square that holds many restaurants and bars. But probably one of my favorite things to do in Rennes is to visit the farmers’ market, Marché des Lices. The first market was held here in 1453, and it has been a gathering point ever since. The market has expanded several times, with everything like fruits and vegetables, flowers, and more being sold here. The market runs every Saturday from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm.
Grande Braderie de Lille in Lille
With over 10,000 exhibitors in the streets, the city of Lille in the north of France hosts one of the largest and oldest flea (跳蚤) markets in Europe, selling antiques, paintings, furniture, and more. It is usually held on the first weekend of September, attracting millions of people every year. With various stands, local foods, a half-marathon, and parties late into the night, there is something for everyone.

As a student in Pakistan, Riffat Arif faced bad treatment from her teachers at school. She dreamed of a teacher who could show equal respect and love to children with no difference, but she could not find that teacher. Therefore, in 1997, at the age of just 13, she founded a school in the courtyard of her home, free to all.
Arif asked her younger sister to learn from her. She also started requesting her friends’ younger sisters or brothers to come to her school, which was a play area for them in the beginning.
Arif wanted to do something opposite to the experiences she had to face as a child. She would take the little children in her lap and teach them that way. When a teacher shows such affection to the children, they feel protected, and they feel like they are with their parents. She wanted teachers to be like that.
However, her parents were not in a position to help her, so she learned to do embroidery (刺绣) to make money and sought support online. She worked eight hours a day, taught her students for four hours and taught herself for four hours to earn degrees in political science and history. She never took a day off. She was focusing only on the three things.
As she expanded her school, she realized the opportunity to go to school was rare for those children who belonged to a poverty-stricken community. In her city, Gujranwala, over 20,000 children were child laborers making money for their families. So she reached out to those parents to make them understand that education was really important. Luckily, many of those children were sent to her school.
Riffat Arif, now known as Sister Zeph, has been awarded the largest annual global prize for teachers, the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize, $1 million, with which Arif planned to buy a piece of land to build a bigger and better school.
24. What led Arif to set up her own school?
A. Her parents’ understanding and support. B. Her teachers’ encouragement at school.
C. Her disappointing childhood schooling. D. Her lack of opportunity to go to school.
25. Why did Arif take the little children in her lap to teach them?
A. They were too young to stand. B. She wanted them to feel loved.
C. She was learning to be a mother. D. They asked to be treated like that.
26. How did Arif help the children in the poor community?
A. By providing jobs for their parents. B. By teaching them to do labor work.
C. By donating a lot of money to them. D. By getting them to receive education.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Arif?
A. Determined but selfish. B. Humorous and responsible.
C. Ambitious and hardworking. D. Unconfident but adventurous.

Big changes can come in tiny details. A publisher has discovered that changing the design and font (字体) in books saves millions of pages and thousands of trees. The design team at Harper Collins examined how they could make their books environmentally friendly while preserving readability.
It all started in 2015 when Zondervan, their division, explored ways to save pages when printing a classic book. The classic is a huge book, consisting of 2,500 pages. To save pages, the division developed a new typeface called NIV Comfort Print that is compact (紧凑) and comfortable to read. The use of Zondervan’s compact font reduced the classic’s length by 350 pages and saved 100 million pages of paper. If these pages were stacked up (堆积), this would be the size of four Empire State Buildings.
Harper Collins wanted to apply this solution to their fiction and non-fiction books. After they asked designers to come up with ideas, the designers created 50 versions of a 600-page book by using easy-to-read fonts and redesigned pages where there was less white space.
During these tests, they focused on fonts that were more compact, coming up with a list of 15 preferred eco-friendly fonts. They also considered white space on the page and created clever designs to make the books more compact without readers even perceiving the difference. Designers also considered the heaviness of the font so the ink would not bleed through the page.
Their new designs save ink, paper, printing costs, and trees while preserving the reader’s positive experience. “It was simply a different approach. Now, our designers are constantly questioning how we do things and thinking about ways to make things more sustainable,” says Tracey Menzies, who works at Harper Collins.
Questioning how we do things to make them more sustainable applies to all, especially those who work at an office with a printer. Be it at home, at school or at work, sustainable solutions can go a long way. And one need not be a publisher to adopt these changes.
28. Why does the author mention the Empire State Building in paragraph 2?
A. To prove the new theory of printing. B. To tell the size of the huge classic book.
C. To show the difficulty of producing paper. D. To explain how much paper can be saved.
29. What did the designers do to save paper on the 600-page book?
A. They reduced white space. B. They shortened the content.
C. They adopted the smallest font. D. They designed digitalized versions.
30. What might the author expect readers to do according to the last paragraph?
A. Remaining unchanged. B. Become a publisher.
C. Live a sustainable life. D. Read books out of curiosity.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. Eco-friendly ways to store books. B. Resource-saving publishing changes.
C. A creative and cooperative publisher. D. An innovative solution to deforestation.
D
When you see robotic lawnmowers’ blades (割草机的叶片) moving fast, you are expecting a more beautiful and tidier lawn in front of your eyes. But sadly, sometimes you can see injured or even dead hedgehogs (刺猬). What a horrible scene!
Sophie Lund Rasmussen, a member of the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit at the University of Oxford, carried out hedgehog crash tests to see if robotic lawnmowers were safe and found the animal was often endangered by the blades because the technology couldn’t detect it.
The sensors and cameras are typically too weak to detect hedgehogs hidden in the grass. The automatic computer-controlled lawnmowers are more dangerous to hedgehogs than human-powered machines because a person would likely discern the animal and stop.
Rasmussen hopes her tests will be known by designers to ensure robotic lawnmowers are hedgehog-safe. “This will eventually allow for a labeling system guiding the consumers into buying hedgehog-friendly robotic lawnmowers, and therefore contribute to the conservation of this declining and beloved species,” she said.
Rasmussen’s finding suggests that these deadly machines need better sensors to spot the animal and change the direction of blades to reduce harm. She added, “The next step is definitely also to apply advanced technology such as camera recognition, which will eventually allow the robotic lawnmowers to detect hedgehogs at a distance, and avoid them.”
Rasmussen tested 19 different types of robotic lawnmowers which are available to buy and found some models were safer for small hedgehogs than others. However, all of these lawnmowers had to physically interact with hedgehogs to detect them before they reacted. Her wish for future machines was that they could detect hedgehogs at a distance and change direction.
“For now, the best advice is to check the lawn for any hedgehog before starting the robotic lawnmower or to only let it run during the day as this reduces the risk of encounters with hedgehogs, which are active primarily at night,” Rasmussen said.
32. What is paragraph 1 mainly intended to show?
A. Robotic lawnmowers have gained popularity.
B. The number of hedgehogs is declining quickly.
C. It’s very challenging to maintain a beautiful lawn.
D. Robotic lawnmowers are dangerous to hedgehogs.
33. What does the underlined word “discern” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Spot. B. Support. C. hide. D. Protect.
34. Rasmussen hopes current robotic lawnmowers can be _________.
A. sold at a more reasonable price B. improved with high technology
C. redesigned by some animal lovers D. changed into human-powered machines
35. What is Rasmussen’s suggestion on using robotic lawnmowers?
A. checking their blades first. B. Following them all the time.
C. Training them with hedgehogs. D. Avoiding using them at night.

In a small town located in the mountains, there was a young boy named Owen. He was crazy about basketball more than anything else in the world. He would spend hours every day practicing his dribbling (运球), shooting and passing. He dreamed of one day winning games on a team.
Owen’s town had a small basketball court that was often empty. Owen would go there every day after school to practice. One day, as he was shooting hoops (投篮), he heard a voice behind him, “Hey, kid! You’re pretty good!”
Owen turned around to see a tall man with a friendly smile. The man introduced himself as Coach Johnson and asked Owen if he wanted to join his basketball team. The team was made up of kids from all over the town, and they practiced every day after school.
Owen was overjoyed because he had never played on a team before. He wanted to start and win games. Owen quickly became the star player of the team.
However, the team never won a game. “I had trained so hard and performed excellently, but we were always losing! Jack should have run much faster towards me and Kris should have passed the ball to me!” Owen kept complaining to the coach.
The complaint seemed understandable! Owen was admired by his teammates because he was fast and had incredible shots. However, Johnson knew Owen lacked something important. He told Owen to learn to play with his teammates as a team instead of just focusing on himself. Owen didn’t quite understand that at first and insisted he just needed to practice harder to win games.
However, disaster struck. Owen injured his ankle one day and had to sit out for several weeks, which let him fall into anxiety. He felt his dream was slipping away.
During his recovery at home, Owen refused to see anyone on the team, except his coach. Johnson handed Owen a phone downloaded with some videos about the best basketball teams and some cards from Owen’s teammates.

Dear Alan,
I’m glad to receive your email, in which you asked if I would like to help pick fruits in your grandfather’s orchard this Saturday. Honestly speaking, I’m more than excited to go.
However, I’m wondering if advance preparations are needed. For example, what kind of clothes should I wear for this work? Is a hat or a pair of gloves necessary? Besides, do I need to take any tools with me so that the fruit-picking activity can go more smoothly?
Please reply to me soon and keep me informed of more details.
Yours,

Owen couldn’t wait to watch those videos. He watched them over and over again, noticing that the players weren’t just good at shooting and dribbling, but also had incredible cooperative spirit. Owen realized that he had been so focused on his own success that he had forgotten about the importance of teamwork. As he thought of his teammates, he saw the words “We are a team!” written on each of the card. He decided to become a better teammate.
After recovering, Owen returned to his team as a changed player. He passed the ball more, encouraged his teammates and worked hard to help improve their skills. Johnson was relieved to see self-centered Owen had got what he had been lacking in. Those diligent kids played as a strong team and they started winning games. To Owen’s delight, his dream finally came true. More importantly, Owen learned that basketball was more about working together as a team.
