Most people celebrate their 80th birthday with cake and candles. Betty Kellenberger celebrated hers by making history.

The Michigan native recently became the oldest woman ever to hike the entire Appalachian Trail —a surprising 2,200-mile difficult walk that stretches across 14 states, with climbs and descents equal to climbing Mount Everest 16 times. “You see incredible parts of our country, things that you wouldn’t see otherwise,” said Kellenberger. “So much wildlife. It’s just beautiful.”

Kellenberger grew up on a farm in Howell, where her fascination with the famous footpath began. For years, she dreamed about hiking the trail from Georgia to Maine, but life never allowed for the six-month commitment it required. Eventually, she realized that nothing was holding her back —so in 2024, she took her first steps on what would become the adventure of a lifetime.

The journey wasn’t easy. Along the way, Kellenberger faced dehydration (脱水) , falls, and even Lyme disease. It was also interrupted by Hurricane Helene, which tore through the eastern United States and forced her to pause at the southern Virginia border. Determined to finish, she rerouted north and continued in the spring of 2025, braving New England’s rocky terrain until the very end.

When she finally reached the end of the trail, the emotions hit hard. “So you’re a basket case,” she laughed. “You have so many emotions because you’re excited about finishing. I was really looking forward to saying, ‘I am done.’ But you also know you’re going to miss this big time. You’re not going to have what you have out on that trail. That peace, the tranquility.”

She described Maine and New Hampshire as the toughest stretches —but also the most rewarding. Now, after months of hiking through rain, heat, and hardship, Kellenberger says she's in the best shape of her life.

24. What history did 80-year-old Kellenberger make?

A. She lived as long a life as 80 years.            B. She spent a lifetime exploring.

C. She climbed Mount Everest all alone.        D. She made a long tough journey.

25. What does the third paragraph indicate?

A. The hiking was her long-held dream.         B. She was a natural sports enthusiast.

C. Her celebration was one like no other.         D. Her difficult life killed her pursuit.

26. What can we infer from paragraph 5?

A. Her success was incomparable.                  B. It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance.

C. The experience blew her away.                   D. She hadn't expected the outcome.

27. Which word best describes Kellenberger from her episode?

A. Self-centered.              B. Emotional.        C. Long-lived.            D. Adventurous.

C

For decades, environmental science focused on identifying isolated (孤立的) problems and their direct fixes. However, a significant shift is now defining the field: researchers are moving from a linear (线性的) view to understanding the Earth as a complex, interconnected system. This new fundamental change reveals that well-intentioned actions can have unintended consequences, making the path to sustainability far more nuanced (复杂) .

The most convincing evidence for this shift comes from research on climate feedback loops. For instance, scientists have discovered that as we successfully reduce air pollution, we also decrease the reflective aerosols (气溶胶) that once subtly cooled the planet. This “unmasking” effect accelerates warming, revealing the full force of greenhouse gases. Similarly, the alarming melt of permafrost (永冻土) is not just a sign of warming; it is a powerful driver, releasing vast stores of methane and carbon dioxide in a self-reinforcing cycle.

This systemic thinking extends to proposed solutions. The concept of planting trees as a simple carbon sink is now examined carefully. Research shows that large-scale afforestation in the wrong locations can reduce the Earth’s reflectivity, absorb more heat, and disturb local water cycles, potentially negating the carbon benefits. The focus has therefore switched to ecosystem-specific restoration and a comprehensive management of natural carbon stocks.

Ultimately, the central insight of modern environmental research is that there are no silver bullets. The challenge is no longer just about inventing cleaner technologies but about managing complex systems. The new frontier is understanding these interconnections to design resilient strategies that work with the planet’s systems, not against them.

28. What are the examples in paragraph 2 serve as?

A. The consequences caused.                         B. The likelihood of the change.

C. The solid proof of the shift.                        D. The prospect of sustainability.

29. What should solutions to natural carbon stocks based on?

A. Precise locations.                                       B. Systemic thinking.

C. Local water cycles.                                    D. Greenhouse gases.

30. What does the author mean by saying “no silver bullets”?

A. The situation is worsening.                         B. It is a challenge like never before.

C. There is no single solution.                         D. Research work is far from perfect.

31. What is the most suitable title for the article?

A. A Harmonious Eco-system is Yet to Arrive

B. From Simple Solutions to Systemic Thinking

C. Sustainable Development is Finally in Sight

D. One-size-fits-all Approaches are Here to Stay

D

According to a new study, men around the world have gained height and weight twice as fast as women over the past century, driving greater differences between the sexes.

“We’re seeing insights into how sexual selection has shaped the male and female body and how improved environments, in terms of food and a lower burden of disease, have freed us from our shackles (束缚) ,” said Prof Lewis Halsey at the University of Roehampton.

Halsey and his colleagues used data from the World Health Organization, overseas authorities and UK records to see how height and weight have changed with living conditions. The latter was measured by the human development index (HDI), a score based on life expectancy, time in education and per capita income, which ranges from zero to one.

Analysis of records from dozens of countries found that for every 0.2 point increase in HDI, women were on average 1.7cm taller and 2.7kg heavier, while men were 4cm taller and 6.5kg heavier. This suggests that as living conditions improve, both height and weight increase, but more than twice as fast in men than women.

Writing in Biology Letters in a study titled “The sexy and powerful male body: men’s height and weight are condition-dependent, sexually selected traits (特性) ”, the scientists suppose that women’s sexual preferences may have fuelled a trend for taller, more muscular men who are believed to be better able to defend their partners and offspring against others.

The findings build on previous work that found women want taller men more than men want shorter women. But, while taller people tend to earn more, they are also more likely to develop various cancers, possibly because they have more cells that can accumulate mutations (突变) which lead to the disease.

Michael Wilson, professor of ecology, evolution and behaviour at the University of Minnesota, said the faster increase in male height and weight was “striking”. He said it was consistent with a long-standing idea that females are “the more ecologically restricted” sex because of the demands of reproduction, particularly in mammals (哺乳动物) where generating and nursing are “energetically expensive”.

32. What differences between the sexes do the findings involve?

A. Nutrition and health.                                  B. Height and weight.

C. Schooling and income.                               D. Gender and growth.

33. What did the study focus on?

A. The contributors to the increase.                 B. The approach to the phenomenon.

C. The consequences of the change.                D. The trend of human development.

34. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 6?

A. The benefits of growing athletic.                B. The preferences for partners.

C. The causes of developing cancer.               D. The downsides of being tall.

35. Why is the increase in female height and weight less striking?

A. Women prioritize health over height.         B. Women’s biological role dominates it.

C. Males tend to choose shorter women.         D. They fall victim to some wrong ideas.

第二节(满分25)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

After a long day riding on the farm, Jorge returned to the house. His mother, Melissa, greeted him, looking upset.

“I have received an offer from Mr. Somerset to sell the farm to Eco-Tours International,” Melissa began. “I’ve always hoped to keep the farm. Sadly, we’re losing money because the land is overgrazed (过度放牧) .” Jorge’s heart dropped. He asked if they had to decide right now.

“Two weeks,” Melissa replied. “We’ll find an answer,” Jorge said, trying to sound optimistic.

The next few days were filled with the hardest work Jorge had ever done. He herded sheep, fixed fencing, … In the evenings, he would sit with his mother, excitedly telling her all he learned on the farm. But when he was done, sadness would fill his heart. He didn’t yet know how to save the farm.

On the fourth day, Jorge came across a guanaco (原驼) with its leg stuck in the fence. Jorge knelt beside it to help, reaching out with a pair of wire cutters. “These are wild animals,” Jorge thought. “They don’t understand fences. In the old days, his mother once told him, there were no fences. The flock (羊群) grazing all over the mountain. It was harder to protect the sheep, but at least there was always enough grass.” Watching the guanaco limping away, Jorge fell silent. Something churned in his mind (心烦) , but he couldn't figure out what it was exactly.

Two days before Mr. Somerset was due to return, Jorge was out on a horse seeking out a sheep that had wandered away. After a while, he spotted her on the other side of that fence. As he approached, he instantly understood what attracted her out —the green grass. Thoughtfully, he looked at the rich pastures (草场) beyond.

Jorge managed to get the sheep in and was about to leave when he noticed a sudden movement. A puma (美洲狮) stood on a flat rock, staring at him. Jorge almost felt sorry for the skinny beast. "It must be hungry,” Jorge said quietly. “The changes to the land affect us all.”

Unlock Growth Through Social Practice

Social practice serves as a crucial bridge connecting classroom learning to real-world application. In the vacation, I volunteered at a local library for half a month, assisting in sorting out and maintaining classical historical works. This experience enhances my practical skills and deepens my understanding of community needs. More importantly, it shapes my social awareness and personal growth.

Based on my experience, I’d like to make some suggestions. First, select work that genuinely interests you. Whether it’s environmental protection or elderly care, passion will sustain your motivation. Secondly, engage fully in the process. Ask questions, take initiative, and immerse yourself in every task. Your active participation makes the experience truly rewarding. Finally, remember to reflect throughout your journey. Keep a simple journal to record insights and challenges. This practice helps internalize lessons and maximizes learning.

Social practice, if its true purpose is achieved, will turn your experience into a journey of growth that shapes you into a responsible and capable citizen.

续写(满分25)

On the way back, Jorge had a picture in his mind. He imagined a farm running endlessly, where their sheep roamed freely alongside guanacos, just as it was in the old days. Without fences, some sheep might fall victim to pumas, but the flock as a whole would survive and grow stronger. Without fences, the land could heal through rotational grazing. Why not remove them? he thought. Jorge realized that he could tell his mother that he had truly learned something. He urged his horse into a gallop. In the house, he laid out his vision to his mother. Melissa listened intently, her eyes gradually lighting up. “You’re right,” she said, her voice firm with newfound hope. “But we might as well consider Mr.Somerset’s offer”, she added. Jorge nodded thoughtfully.

Then came the day when Mr.Somerset returned. Jorge stood beside his mother, holding their new farm plan. “We’re not selling,” Melissa announced confidently. Jorge presented their vision: an eco-ranch where tourists could see wildlife coexisting with livestock. Mr.Somerset frowned initially, but as Jorge explained how sustainable grazing would restore the land’s fertility and how healthy predators meant a healthy ecosystem and potential for eco-tourism, his expression softened. “Smart young man,” he finally said, patting Jorge on the shoulder. “Eco-Tours might want to invest in this model instead.” Hope blossomed in Jorge’s chest as well as in his mother’s—they found an answer that honored both their heritage and the land.
